Dymitr Sprudin

(1918 - 2000), brother of the cinematographers Mikołaj and Sergiusz Sprudin. Photographer and stills photographer who collaborated with the Feature Film Studio in Łódź.

Edward Zajiček in his monumental book “Beyond the Screen” evokes his memories of the Sprudin brothers. One of the recollections goes back to the post-war period: “Those who stayed in the country or moved to the West were willing to share their experiences. Those who came back from the East distinguished themselves by reticence. This is the reason why Tadeusz Kański’s history from Oświęcim is far better known than Adolf Forbert’s involvement in the Red Army or the fate of three Vilnius Home Army soldiers: Dymitr, Mikołaj and Sergiusz Sprudins. The incomers from the East did it this way out of precaution, they rarely joked”.

And the second Zajiček’s recollection: “This great enterprise [Film Polski] was established in a hurry and lived its own life. Sometimes, people who worked there suddenly disappeared. One day, Dymitr and Mikołaj (Kola) Sprudin did not appear at the filming location. The night before, they bid their friends goodbye and the next day their room stood empty. The very same day, in the laboratory in Łódź, Lt Henryk Nowicki, a chairman of Polish People’s Party in the Department of Film Production, did not come to work. Aleksander Ford avoided answers to many questions, supposedly, not having them. Neither did those arrested, sentenced to death or life imprisonment and freed in 1955 know what their fault actually was”.
