Julian Magda

(Born 15.10.1930, died 3.04.1985 in Wrocław) Assistant DoP and still photographer. In the 1950s, he was a gunsmith in the army, reaching the rank of lieutenant. In 1957, he was released back to civilian life due to the fact he didn't have a high school diploma. At that time, there was a vacancy in the Feature Film Studio in Wrocław for a mechanic and so Magda started work there on 1 April 1958. He knew a little about photography and he quickly showed himself to be a competent professional, able to take care of the equipment and the cameras.

Gradually, he was entrusted with more serious tasks. He began by doing test shooting in the Studio, and then - if anybody was missing - he would go increasingly often to join up with the film crews out on location. From the beginning of the 1960s, he was a permanent assistant to DoPs, working on such films as "Nóż w wodzie", "Szyfry", "Sami swoi" and "Jezioro osobliwości". He often took stills when carrying out his duties as an assistant. He gained recognition in the industry primarily as the photographer of the dynamic stills for Chęciński's comedy "Sami swoi". Originally, he photographed with Pentacons and Zenits and then switched to twin lens reflex Rolleiflex.
