Stefan Kurzyp

Camera assistant and still photographer connected with the Studio in Wrocław. He was interested in photography from his early youth and when he worked already as camera assistant and got the offer to earn some extra money as still photographer, he agreed without hesitation. “It was work on the film »Ściana czarownic« directed by Paweł Komorowski" – he says. “The production manager, Tadeusz Karwański, didn’t want to hire somebody in addition, because the shooting took place in the mountains, in difficult conditions. He tells me: »For you, it is surely not a problem to hang the camera on the neck, and I won’t have to be responsible for another person in these mountains«"1.

The first Kurzyp’s camera was Magnolia for cut 13x18 films. And although taking photographs in the mountains with this hardly mobile camera that required a tripod was hassle, Kurzyp made it great as still photographer and from that time on he was in many films both the camera assistant and the still photographer. He started using 6x6 camera rather quickly – after all, this format is still valued the most. Kurzyp always tried to make such stills that “show primarily all relationships between main characters and their emotions and that was the way in which he presented the history of the film"2. For his stills to the movie “Lalka" by Has, he received an award from the Central Photographic Agency. “After all, it was Wojciech Has with whom the work on choosing stills was the best" – he says. “Wojciech knew that a still is the best advertisement and that it can make the audience interested in the film long before it is launched. Many other directors made great movies and art, but they completely underestimated the role of stills. And Has knew that stills somehow represent his film and that is why it has to be the best. »Lalka« is very close to my heart, I made hundreds of photographs on the set then. I kept many of these original negatives to »Lalka« in may home archives as a precious souvenir"3
