Krzysztof Wellman
(born 1958) A photographer, one of the most widely known film still photographers. "I love to make photographs – he says. This is my life. (...) I record the faces of actors, watch the work on the set, freeze the frame. I am interested in not only the stars. Supporting actors, directors, cinematographers, props are my heroes – all those who create the world we watch on the screen".
Initially, he was associated with Irzykowski Studio, and then he started to cooperate with other film crews. He made stills for films by Juliusz Machulski, Krzysztof Zanussi, Marek Koterski, Jerzy Stuhr and Feliks Falk. "Krzysztof Wellman is a shy photographer" – says Falk. "It has its good side, because when making stills on the set, he tries to be invisible and not to bother anybody. But when I watch these photographs afterwards, I wonder how it is possible for such a shy fellow to see that much and capture it? Maybe this is what they call professionalism?"1.
"Some say he is shy but believe me – he is not!" – says Jan Kidawa Błoński in turn. "He is soft-spoken at work, but suggestive. After work – an enormous chatterbox. (...) The most gifted photographer I worked with"2.
His stills to "Kilerów 2-óch", "Duże zwierzę", "Prymas" or "Wróżby kumaka" were published in albums telling the story of production of each of these movies and announcing their cinema premieres. What is more, Wellman's portfolio includes a number of his original exhibitions, "Świat filmu" of 1993 and "Kuchnia filmowa Krzysztofa Wellmana" of 2006.
