Otwierający trylogię Trzy kolory film Niebieski opowiada historię młodej wdowy, która po tragicznej śmierci męża i córki stara się ułożyć sobie życie na nowo. Postanawia uwolnić się od wszystkiego, co mogłoby powtórnie przyprawić ją o cierpienie. Ostatecznie jednak zamiast "wolności od..." wybiera "wolność do..." skierowaną w stronę miłości. Krzysztof Kieślowski, reżyser filmu, oraz Krzysztof Piesiewicz, współscenarzysta trylogii, nie kryli, że cała trylogia ""trójkolorowa" nawiązuje do barw flagi francuskiej (film jest w głównej mierze produkcją francuską) oraz do haseł rewolucji francuskiej: wolności, równości i braterstwa. Ta deklaracja podsuwa pierwszy klucz interpretacyjny do Niebieskiego, który zachęca do namysłu nad pojęciem wolności u kresu XX wieku; oprac. Mikołaj Jazdon | Blue, the film opening the Three Colours trilogy tells the story of a young widow who tries to arrange her life anew after the tragic death of her husband and daughter. She decides to free herself from everything that could make her suffer again. Ultimately, however, instead of 'freedom from…' she chooses 'freedom to…' directed towards love. Krzysztof Kieślowski, the film's director, and Krzysztof Piesiewicz, the co-writer of the trilogy, did not hide the fact that the whole 'three-colour' trilogy refers to the colours of the French flag (the film is mainly a French production) and to the slogans of the French revolution: freedom, equality, and fraternity.
